AGAINST the initial truce reached with singer Tuface Idibia to go ahead with the proposed planned protest information reaching our newsroom say the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni has rescinded his decision to allow the planned protest to hold in Lagos, Nigeria.

This followed criticisms by many Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora who questioned te rationale behind banning the planned protest. The Federal Government on Friday made its position clear saying it was not against any form of protest that is peaceful which probably made the Lagos Police boss to have backpedaled.

Earlier, Owoseni had said: “We had a meeting with the protesters and we explained to them why we advised against the protest. A pro-government group wants to protest that same day and we don’t want a situation where there would be friction.
“We also don’t want hooligans to hijack the process and injure the protesters. “After explaining to them, they said they will go back and discuss with others. They said if they decide to go ahead, they won’t demonstrate but would assemble at a point and read their demands.
“That notwithstanding, we have resolved to provide security for them. It is our responsibility and we won’t shy away from it. We will ensure trouble makers do not hijack the process.”

But later on Friday night, Fatai Owoseni, the Lagos State Police Commissioner backed out of the truce and maintained his earlier stand that the planned protest be shelved citing reports of an ill-conceived plan by criminals and hoodlums to hijack the process.

This, however, did not go down well with many people and intelligent reports reaching our newsroom tonight from police circles in Lagos says Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) feels challenged by by the protest in his domain and issued orders to the Lagos Police Commissioner that the protest must not hold in Lagos under his watch for fear of weakening his political influence and grip on Lagos.

Agreeing to do the bidding of Mr. Tinubu, the Lagos State Police Commissioner later on Friday night issued a statement saying  “Information reaching us revealed that some hoodlums are planning to hijack the peaceful protest,” Owoseni told The Nation newspaper on Wednesday.

“And as such, we won’t allow it to hold in Lagos. We know that 2face 'do not' have the capacity to contain such a crowd and we will not fold our hands and watch while things go out of hand.”, he added in flawed English
